Beyond The Borders Tours Partners with Revive Afghanistan

We are proud to announce a new partnership between Beyond The Borders Tours and Revive Afghanistan NZ, through which a portion of every Afghanistan tour we operate will help support humanitarian and community projects across the country.

At Beyond The Borders, we have always believed that responsible travel should benefit more than the person taking the journey. Tourism can provide employment, support locally owned businesses and create opportunities for genuine cultural exchange. However, we also want our presence in the countries we visit to contribute directly to the communities that welcome us.

Our partnership with Revive Afghanistan NZ is an important step towards making that commitment a permanent part of how we operate.

Revive Afghanistan

Who are Revive Afghanistan NZ?

Revive Afghanistan NZ is a registered New Zealand charitable trust operated by Revive All NZ. The organisation was established by a team of Afghan New Zealanders who wanted to respond directly to the challenges facing people across Afghanistan.

The charity is registered in New Zealand and works alongside a team based in Afghanistan to deliver projects directly on the ground. Its Afghan operations are based in Nangarhar Province, allowing the organisation to assess local needs, coordinate distributions and oversee the delivery of its projects.

Revive Afghanistan’s work combines immediate humanitarian relief with projects intended to provide longer-term and more sustainable support.

This includes:

  • Educational and English-language classes
  • School supplies and support for young people
  • Orphan and family sponsorship
  • Food assistance for vulnerable households
  • Clean-water and well-building projects
  • Support for widows
  • Small-business and income-generating projects
  • Emergency responses following floods, earthquakes and other disasters

The organisation also maintains an on-the-ground team in Afghanistan to help ensure that projects are completed and funding is used where it can have the greatest impact.

Supporting access to education

Education is currently one of Revive Afghanistan’s priority areas.

Its educational projects are intended to help children access lessons and learning materials that may otherwise be unavailable to them. Subjects offered through its classes include English, mathematics, reading and writing in local languages.

The charity also distributes school bags, stationery and other essential supplies. These may seem like relatively simple items, but they can remove a significant barrier for families that cannot afford the basic equipment their children need to attend classes.

We have seen photographs from some of these distributions, showing classrooms filled with young students receiving new school bags and educational materials. They are powerful reminders that relatively modest contributions can create something practical and meaningful.

Education does not only affect an individual student. It can create greater opportunities for families and help communities build more secure futures. That is one of the reasons we are particularly interested in supporting Revive Afghanistan’s classes and educational projects as this partnership develops.

Helping orphans and vulnerable families

Revive Afghanistan also operates programmes supporting orphans, widows and families experiencing severe financial hardship.

Its orphan-support programme can provide food, clothing, medicine and access to education. The charity also offers family-sponsorship options that may combine monthly food support, education for children and assistance with housing.

For many households, emergency food support provides immediate relief. However, Revive Afghanistan also recognises the importance of helping families move towards greater independence.

Its micro-business projects are designed to give people the equipment, resources or initial support needed to establish a small source of income. The aim is not simply to provide short-term assistance, but to give individuals the opportunity to support themselves and their families over a longer period.

Food and water relief

Food insecurity remains a serious challenge for many families in Afghanistan.

Revive Afghanistan provides food packs containing essential products such as flour, rice, oil, sugar, tea, beans and other household staples. These distributions are directed towards vulnerable families and those facing acute hardship.

The organisation has also made access to clean water a major part of its long-term work.

Its water-relief projects include constructing wells in villages where residents may otherwise need to travel considerable distances to collect water. Improving local access to safe water can benefit health, reduce the daily burden placed on families and allow children to spend more time attending school.

Revive Afghanistan reports that it has already constructed dozens of wells and provided food assistance to thousands of people through its projects.

Responding when emergencies happen

Afghanistan is vulnerable to earthquakes, flash floods, harsh winters and other emergencies that can leave families without food, shelter or essential supplies.

Revive Afghanistan responds to emergencies by distributing items such as food, drinking water, blankets and other immediate necessities. Its website documents responses to floods and other disasters, including relief work in Nangarhar and Nuristan.

Having an established team on the ground means assistance can be organised with an understanding of the communities affected and the items that are most urgently required.

This ability to respond quickly is another important reason we felt Revive Afghanistan was the right organisation for us to support.

How our partnership will work

A portion of every Beyond The Borders Afghanistan tour will now be donated to support the projects operated by Revive Afghanistan NZ.

This will apply across our scheduled group departures as well as private Afghanistan tours.

There will be no separate compulsory donation added to the traveller’s booking. The contribution will come from the amount already paid to Beyond The Borders for the tour.

As the number of people travelling with us grows, we want the support generated through our tours to grow alongside it.

We will also share updates about the projects being supported so our travellers can understand more about the work taking place and the wider impact their journey is helping to create.

Our intention is to build a genuine long-term relationship rather than make a single donation or support one isolated campaign. Revive Afghanistan operates a diverse range of projects, and the needs of communities can change. This flexibility will allow contributions to support education, humanitarian relief, vulnerable families or emergency responses according to where assistance is most needed.

What responsible travel means to us

Responsible travel is sometimes reduced to environmental claims or broad marketing statements. For us, it needs to be practical and measurable.

When we operate a tour, we work with local guides, drivers, accommodation providers, restaurants and other local suppliers. This ensures that a significant part of the cost of travelling remains within the destination and directly supports people working in its tourism industry.

Our travellers eat in local restaurants, visit markets, stay in locally operated accommodation where practical and spend time with the people and communities they meet.

This partnership allows us to go one step further.

It creates a direct connection between each Afghanistan tour and projects supporting education, food security, access to clean water, vulnerable families and emergency relief.

We do not believe visiting a country means ignoring its challenges. Nor do we believe that Afghanistan and its people should be viewed only through those challenges.

Responsible travel should allow people to learn, listen and engage honestly with the country they are visiting. It should also recognise the responsibility that comes with entering communities and benefiting from their hospitality.

Experiencing Afghanistan beyond the headlines

Afghanistan is one of the most frequently discussed yet least understood countries in the world.

For many people, everything they know about it comes from news reports, conflict coverage and political discussion. Those subjects are an important part of understanding modern Afghanistan, but they do not represent the entirety of the country or the lives of the people who live there.

Travelling through Afghanistan introduces visitors to its extraordinary landscapes, ancient history, diverse communities and deep traditions of hospitality.

Our tours travel through historic cities, rural regions, mountain landscapes and communities that receive relatively few international visitors. Guests meet local people, learn about everyday life and encounter perspectives that are difficult to understand from a distance.

We want to facilitate those experiences honestly and responsibly.

By partnering with Revive Afghanistan, we can also help our travellers understand how tourism can contribute positively. Their journey will support the people employed directly through the tour while also helping fund projects assisting communities elsewhere in the country.

Transparency and sharing the impact

Revive Afghanistan publishes information, photographs and project updates to help supporters see how its work is being carried out.

Its website includes information about active campaigns, previous projects and the process used to deliver assistance. The organisation states that it works through its own team and trusted local partners in Afghanistan to monitor projects and ensure support reaches the intended communities.

We intend to share relevant updates through the Beyond The Borders website, our social media channels and our future impact reporting.

This is not about turning charitable support into a marketing gimmick. We simply believe our guests deserve to understand how their tour contributes to the country they are visiting.

Sharing the work also gives Revive Afghanistan an opportunity to reach a wider international audience and helps demonstrate the positive impact that thoughtfully managed tourism can have.

Part of a wider commitment

Our work with Revive Afghanistan is part of a wider commitment to responsible travel across every destination in which Beyond The Borders operates.

We are exploring similar relationships with local charities, community initiatives and responsible organisations in other countries. Every destination is different, and the most effective form of support will not always be the same.

In some countries, it may involve educational projects. Elsewhere, it could involve environmental conservation, cultural preservation, healthcare or direct community support.

The principle will remain consistent: as Beyond The Borders grows, the benefits created through our tours should grow too.

We are still a relatively young company, and we know that building a genuinely responsible travel business is an ongoing process. It requires us to listen to local partners, remain transparent and continually assess how our tours affect the places in which we operate.

This partnership represents an important step in that process.

Looking ahead

We are extremely proud to work alongside Revive Afghanistan NZ and to support an organisation whose team shares such a clear commitment to Afghanistan and its people.

Our first contributions will come from our upcoming Afghanistan departures, with support continuing across all future group and private tours.

Over time, we hope to share more about the individual projects supported through this partnership and the people and communities benefiting from them.

Every person who travels with Beyond The Borders will play a part in making that possible.

By joining one of our Afghanistan tours, you will not only experience an extraordinary country, support local employment and meet the people who call it home. Your journey will also help contribute to projects working to improve access to education, provide food and water, support vulnerable families and respond when emergencies occur.

Thank you to Revive Afghanistan NZ for trusting us to support its work, and thank you to every traveller whose booking helps make this partnership possible.

Together, we hope to demonstrate that travel can create understanding, support livelihoods and leave something positive behind.
