Chele La Pass: The Highest Road Pass in Bhutan
Chele La Pass is the highest motorable road pass in Bhutan, sitting at an altitude of 3,988 metres. Located between Paro and the remote Haa Valley, it is one of the most scenic drives in the country and a highlight of any journey through western Bhutan.
The road to the pass winds steadily upwards through dense pine and rhododendron forests, before opening out into wide alpine views. As you gain elevation, the air becomes noticeably thinner and the landscape shifts, with fewer trees and more exposed mountain terrain.

The Journey to the Pass
The drive from Paro to Chele La takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on stops. The road itself is in good condition but narrow in places, with a series of sharp bends as it climbs.
Along the way, you will pass through forested sections that are particularly vibrant in spring, when the rhododendrons are in bloom. As you get closer to the top, the trees begin to thin out, replaced by open slopes and views across the surrounding valleys.
It is a steady climb, but one that never feels rushed. Most journeys include stops along the way to take in the scenery.
At the Top of Chele La
At the summit, the landscape opens up completely. Colourful prayer flags stretch across the pass, moving constantly in the wind, which is often strong at this altitude.
On a clear day, you can see across to some of Bhutan’s highest peaks, including Mount Jomolhari, one of the most sacred mountains in the country. The views extend across both the Paro Valley and the Haa Valley, giving a real sense of the scale of the landscape.
Temperatures at the top are significantly cooler than in the valleys below, and it is not uncommon to experience a noticeable drop in temperature even during warmer months.
Gateway to the Haa Valley
Chele La Pass is also the main access point to the Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s least visited regions. Descending from the pass, the road leads into a quieter, more traditional part of the country.
The Haa Valley is known for its slower pace, fewer tourists, and strong cultural identity. The journey over Chele La is not just about reaching the highest point, but about connecting two very different parts of Bhutan.
