North Korea Travel Insurance

Travelling to North Korea (DPRK) is an extraordinary experience – a rare opportunity to visit one of the world’s least-visited destinations. At Beyond the Borders Tours, your wellbeing is our top priority. While North Korea is extremely safe and carefully managed, we require all travellers to hold comprehensive medical insurance that covers them for the full duration of their journey.

Why You Need Medical Insurance for North Korea

North Korea is one of the world’s safest destinations in terms of personal security, but if you fall ill or have an accident, medical care may be arranged through designated hospitals and clinics. In more serious situations, travellers may need to be transferred abroad for specialist treatment.

For that reason, all visitors must arrange travel medical insurance that covers the length of their stay in the country.

If you were to fall ill or be injured, Beyond the Borders Tours and our local partners would help you access medical care within the country and assist in arranging onward travel to a facility abroad (typically in China) where your insurance applies.

All medical and transport costs, however, remain your personal responsibility, and any reimbursement or claim must be handled directly with your insurer.

Important Information About Coverage

Most travel insurance companies either restrict or exclude cover for North Korea. You must therefore check directly with your provider that:

  • The DPRK is not excluded from your policy.

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation are included.

  • Coverage is sufficient for your trip’s duration and any connected travel.

We recommend choosing a policy with at least €100,000 (or equivalent) in medical evacuation cover.

What Beyond the Borders Tours Will Do

In the rare event of a medical emergency, our team will:

  • Assist you in receiving immediate care at an approved medical facility.

  • Help coordinate logistics for transport to another country if further treatment is necessary.

  • Communicate with your insurer and provide local support to facilitate care.

While we will do everything possible to assist, Beyond the Borders Tours is not responsible for the costs of treatment, transportation, or evacuation. These must be covered by you and your insurer.

Coverage for Activities

Some tours include physical activities such as cycling, hiking, running, or skiing. Ensure that your policy explicitly includes these – some standard plans exclude even moderate adventure activities unless specifically added.

If unsure, confirm with your insurer in writing before travel.

Check before Travelling

While medical incidents during travel in North Korea are exceptionally uncommon, suitable insurance is an essential safeguard. It offers reassurance that, in the unlikely event of illness or injury, you will receive appropriate care and can be transported swiftly to where full treatment is available.

Before departure, always confirm with your insurer that:

  • North Korea (DPRK) is included in your coverage.

  • Your policy provides medical evacuation and repatriation.

  • Your coverage limits and emergency procedures are clearly stated.

Travelling with Beyond the Borders Tours gives you the rare opportunity to explore North Korea safely and responsibly – supported by preparation, professionalism, and the confidence that you’re covered wherever your journey takes you.
