How to Get to Bhutan & Entry Requirements

The main international gateway to Bhutan is Paro International Airport, nestled in the Paro Valley. Flights operate from select cities such as Bangkok, Delhi and Kathmandu, with spectacular mountain views on approach.

A visa is required for most visitors except those from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives. All visas must be arranged in advance through an authorised tour operator, and clearance is issued before travel. In addition, visitors pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which supports Bhutan’s education, healthcare and environmental protection.

Most travellers must book their trip with a licensed tour operator to ensure smooth logistics and quality guiding. At Beyond the Borders Tours, we handle all visa procedures and travel arrangements, making arrival simple and stress-free.

Bhutan Travel Logistics

Travelling through Bhutan is typically done by private vehicle, accompanied by a driver and an experienced local guide. The country’s winding mountain roads offer breathtaking scenery at every turn, passing through lush valleys, ancient villages and dramatic mountain passes. Journeys are often as memorable as the destinations themselves, with regular stops for photos, tea breaks and short walks.

Accommodation ranges from cosy guesthouses and traditional lodges to elegant boutique hotels and luxury resorts. Whether staying in a simple farmhouse or a high-end retreat, guests can expect warm Bhutanese hospitality and unique cultural touches.

The country’s cuisine is both distinctive and hearty. Travellers should be sure to try Ema Datshi, a beloved dish of chillies and local cheese , along with freshly made momos (dumplings) and aromatic teas. Meals are often made with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.

Health and travel insurance are essential when visiting Bhutan. Medical facilities outside major towns are limited, so comprehensive coverage that includes evacuation is recommended. We suggest using IATA’s trusted insurance options to ensure peace of mind throughout your journey. For information on IATA, check out our Travel Insurance page.

When it comes to packing, layers are key. Weather conditions can vary with altitude and season, so bring warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes and sunscreen. Modest dress is required at religious sites, so pack clothing that covers shoulders and knees.

Culture, Customs & Etiquette

Bhutan is a deeply Buddhist nation, where spirituality is woven into daily life. Monasteries, temples and dzongs are not only sacred spaces but also central to community identity. Visitors are expected to show respect by removing hats and shoes before entering religious buildings and maintaining a quiet, reverent demeanour.

Modest dress is essential, particularly at religious and cultural sites. Clothing should cover shoulders and knees, and visitors should avoid wearing hats indoors. This respect for tradition reflects the Bhutanese emphasis on preserving their heritage and way of life.

Photography is welcomed in many areas, but always ask permission before photographing people, monks or religious ceremonies. Some sacred spaces may have restrictions on photography altogether, so it’s best to check with your guide before taking any pictures.

Respect for culture and the environment lies at the heart of Bhutanese tourism, ensuring that every traveller contributes to the preservation of this unique heritage.

Essential Bhutan Tour (7 Days)

Our carefully designed Essential Bhutan Tour offers the perfect introduction to the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Blending cultural discovery with scenic drives, spiritual experiences and gentle adventure, it’s ideal for first-time visitors.

Day 1 – Thimphu
Arrive in Paro, where your guide and driver will welcome you and drive to Thimphu. On the way, pause at Chuzom to see the three stupas and cross the 15th-century iron bridge at Tachogang Lhakhang. In Thimphu, visit the Institute of Zorig Chusum (arts school), see the massive Buddha Dordenma statue, and experience evening chants or monastic activity at Tashichho Dzong.

Day 2 – Punakha (via Dochula Pass)
Depart Thimphu early and ascend through the peaceful Dochula Pass, where the 108 chortens stand as sentinels. Continue descending into the fertile Punakha Valley. After checking in, visit Punakha Dzong – beautifully situated between two rivers – followed by a village walk to Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple), with its fascinating local stories.

Day 3 – Punakha & Surrounds
Begin with a riverside hike along the Mo Chhu River, passing rice paddies, chilli fields, and rural vistas to reach the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, created by the Queen Mother. Later, visit the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, perched on a forested ridge. For those seeking adventure, optional white-water rafting is offered on the Mo Chhu or Pho Chhu rivers. Finish with a traditional farmhouse visit or an ara-making demonstration.

Day 4 – Paro (via Simtokha & Dzongs)
Leave Punakha early for Paro. En route, visit Simtokha Dzong – Bhutan’s oldest fortress, now a Buddhist institute. Once in Paro, explore Ta Dzong (watchtower turned museum) and Rinpung Dzong, known for its ornate murals and wooden galleries. Spend the evening strolling through Paro town or relaxing at your lodge.

Day 5 – Tiger’s Nest & Temple Visits
Rise early for the iconic trek to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), perched nearly 900 m above the valley floor. The round trip takes about five hours (ponies available for part of the ascent). In the afternoon, recover and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest sacred temples. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with your guide and fellow travellers, reflecting on your Bhutan experience.

Day 6 – Departure
After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your flight home. Your guide will assist with check-in, and you leave Bhutan carrying rich memories of its landscapes, culture and spiritual depth.
