This tour has been thoughtfully designed in collaboration with Afghan Cooks, bringing together culture, heritage, and authentic local experience.
Afghanistan is far more than a destination. It is a country shaped by history, tradition, and strong community ties. This journey offers the opportunity to experience it in a structured and well-supported environment, travelling with a small group and experienced local guides.
The tour focuses on meaningful experiences, from historic cities and cultural landmarks to everyday life and personal interactions. It is not simply about visiting Afghanistan, but about engaging with it in a way that is considered, respectful, and grounded.
- Upon arrival into Kabul, our local guide and driver will meet you at the airport. We suggest departing on the 4:30am Flydubai flight from Dubai, arriving into Kabul at 8:05am.
- We will grab some local breakfast, check into our hotel, have some rest, and hold a short briefing with our local guide.
- Your tour begins with a venture into Kabul to exchange money and organise your local Afghan clothing. You are welcome to buy as many sets as you like, premade or tailored.
- Stroll through the historic open-air Mandawi Bazaar and Bird Market, offering an incredible insight into local life
- See a wide range of vendors including butchers, blacksmiths, bakers, and fresh produce sellers
- Try a variety of local delicacies and street food throughout the day
- Head to Bibi Mahroo Hill (Big Flag Hill) at sunset for panoramic views over the city
- Visit the Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque (Mosque of the King of Two Swords)
- Visit the National Museum of Afghanistan
- Explore Babur Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1528
- Enjoy saffron tea in the gardens
- Visit Chicken Street’s antique shops for souvenirs
- Option to have a traditional black-and-white photograph taken with a 50-year-old camera by photographer Haji Mirzaman
- We depart Kabul for a scenic 5-hour drive to Bamyan, home of the iconic Bamyan Buddhas. Our route takes us through the Hajigak Mountain Pass at 3,700 metres above sea level.
- Visit the Sakhi Shrine, associated with the safekeeping of the Prophet Muhammad’s cloak
- Explore Darul Aman Palace, a symbol of Afghanistan’s early modern history
- Enjoy scenic stops along the way through mountain landscapes
- After breakfast, we check into our hotel and register with the Provincial Afghan Tourism Department.
- Visit the ruins of Gholghula City (City of Screams) and learn about the Mongol siege of Bamyan
- Explore Shahr-e-Zohak (Red City), dating back to 500–600 AD, and hike to the top for panoramic views
- Visit the Bamyan Buddha sites, once the tallest standing Buddha statues in the world and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- We head to the magnificent Band-e-Amir Lakes, one of Afghanistan’s most beautiful natural sites.
- Take in breathtaking landscapes and views of nomadic life along the way
- Stop at scenic viewpoints for photography
- Explore the lakes, with the option to rent swan pedal boats
- Browse local stalls and enjoy fresh fruit
- Meet locals enjoying picnics in this popular domestic travel destination
- Visit Dragon Valley, a natural formation said to resemble a dragon split in two
- We leave early for a long drive of approximately 10 hours towards Samangan and Mazar-e-Sharif.
- Stop along the way for breakfast items such as fruit, cakes, and milk
- Take scenic breaks for photos along the river and surrounding landscapes
- Cross the Salang Pass, known for dramatic mountain views
- Pass through provincial bazaars including Pol-e-Khomri and Aybak
- Visit the Stupa and Monastery of Takht-i-Rostam, a significant Buddhist site from the 4th–5th centuries AD
- After breakfast, we continue to Mazar-e-Sharif and visit the Afghan Tour branch before heading to Balkh Province.
- Visit Masjid-i-Haji Piyada (Masjid-i-No Gumbad), one of the oldest Islamic monuments in Afghanistan
- Explore the Shrine of Khwaja Abu Nasr Parsa
- Visit the Tomb of Rabi’a Balkhi, a celebrated Afghan poetess
- Explore Bala Hissar, the ruins of ancient Balkh
- Visit the Khanqah of Baha al-Din Walad, father of Rumi
- After breakfast, we check out and visit the Blue Mosque of Mazar-e-Sharif, one of Afghanistan’s most iconic landmarks.
- We then transfer to the airport for our flight to Kabul.
- Upon arrival: Check into the hotel and have lunch
- Visit Istalif village, known for its traditional pottery
- Meet local craftsmen and see how the iconic blue and green glazed ceramics are shaped and fired using centuries-old techniques
- Upon arrival in Herat, we register with the Afghanistan Tourism Department.
- Visit Masjid-e-Jami (Friday Mosque), one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region
- Explore the Citadel of Alexander the Great, dating back to 330 BC
- Visit the Musallah Complex, with its surviving minarets built in 1417
- Visit the Khwaja Abdullah Ansari Shrine, one of the most beautiful sites in Herat
- Spend the day engaging with inspiring local women, combining visits to female-led businesses with a hands-on Afghan cooking experience.
- Meet women entrepreneurs and learn how they are building and sustaining their businesses
- Gain insight into daily life and the evolving role of women in Afghan society
- Visit local workshops and markets supporting community-led initiatives
- Join a local family to prepare traditional Afghan dishes
- Share the meal together, experiencing authentic Afghan hospitality
- We will depart Herat for our road trip to Kandahar, the founding place of the Taliban.
- On the way, we will visit lots of traditional mud houses, markets and beautiful mosques.
- We will pass through Helmand province, famous for conflict and home to the former British military base - Camp Bastion
- Our day in Kandahar begins with registering at the Provincial Afghanistan Tourism Department
- Visit a local farm to harvest fresh pomegranates and gain insight into traditional farming methods
- We will visit the historic Char Suq bazaar, where four main streets intersect, surrounded by traditional shops and stalls which ends at The Shahidan Chawk.
- We will visit sacred and historical sites including the Shrine of the Prophet’s Cloak, the Mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Durrani, and the Tomb of Mir Wais Hotak.
- Later, we’ll ascend Chilzina (“The Forty Steps”) for a sweeping view of the city.
- Before ending the day, we’ll visit the Red Mosque.
- We leave early for our journey back to Kabul, travelling through changing landscapes and mountain scenery. Along the way, we will make regular stops for rest breaks and photo opportunities, taking in views of rural villages, open valleys and daily life along the road.
